Nature's bounty... at Durham City Farmers' Market

Have you discovered Durham City Farmers' Market yet?

Taking place in our historic Market Place on the third Thursday of each month from 9am to 3:30pm, Durham City Farmers' Market features a wide variety of local, free-range and fresh produce from across the North East.

Durham Markets established the City Farmers' Market 12 years ago, as a way of connecting farmers with the public and bringing a wide range of locally produced food straight to the masses.

Our farmers are hugely experienced independents who are real experts in their field, and the variety and quality of their offering makes the Farmers' Market a truly alternative way to shop.

By cutting out the middle men and buying direct, produce here is much cheaper than in your average supermarket... and the food tastes really fresh!

It's also the perfect way to reduce your weekly food miles and support the local economy, picking up local independent produce within hours of it being picked.

Who's coming in July?:

Why not come along this Thursday to find out what’s in season, chat to the stallholders and get ideas for new recipes.

Whatever the weather, we'll be happy to see you! :-)

Season for good weather

Never has Durham City needed good weather more than during the week ahead. Why?

We've got the Miners' Gala, Ed Miliband is speaking, a visit by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and Durham City Farmers' Market, of course!

July is always a busy month in Durham and this year is no exception...

The annual Durham Miner's Gala takes place in the city tomorrow, Saturday 14th July, with hundreds of ex-miners and their families taking to the streets with their banners and brass bands in a traditional March through the City and down to the Racecourse, where a political speech will be delivered this year by Labour leader Ed Miliband. In the afternoon, the procession will then march on up to the Cathedral for a special service of thanksgiving and a blessing of the banners.

The Miners' Gala is traditionally the busiest day of the year, with crowds thronging the streets and people celebrating across the City. The music, the uniforms and the vibrant colours are always spectacular. If the sun shines, it promises to be the perfect occasion!

Next Wednesday 18th July is another highlight for the City, as the Queen and Prince Philip take a trip up to Durham Castle, passing through the Market Place at lunchtime. The last time that the Queen came to visit Durham was during her Golden Jubilee tour of Great Britain in 2002, so it's a very special occasion and one that we are very much looking forward to.

And finally, on Thursday 19th July, it's Durham City Farmers' Market! The perfect place for you to meet local farmers and pick up best quality farm produce direct from the producers themselves at fantastic prices.

So away with the brollies, raincovers and kagools!

Here's to a full week of sunshine in Durham - starting.... NOW! :-)
